Chest Breathing 1
Most new yoga students breathe shallowly and quickly, using only their upper chest.  To take a really deep breath, you need to open up the entire rib cage, including all the muscles at the front of the rib cage, right down to the last rib before your belly.  This exercise will help you become more aware of the entire front of your rib cage and will develop the muscles there, which, by now, may have become sluggish and weakened from lack of use.  It will also give you more control so that you will be able to pace your breathing and slow it down by the time you get to Yellow Level.

Your Thoughts
• This is boring.
• This is pointless.
• This is annoying.
• You fal asleep.

Remedies
• Sit.  Stay!
• Do more meditation.
• At least go through the motions
of sitting & breathing in and out.
• Sit up for meditation.

(BTW: Falling asleep from boredom and avoidance is different than falling asleep because you’re tired. In time, you’ll be able to tell the difference, mostly because of what kinds of thoughts precede the ‘sleepiness’.)

Boredom during meditation is a sign that buried thoughts and feelings are about to come up.  You’ve buried them for a reason: you don’t want to have them, lor ook at them or experience them.

This is an important time and an important sign. Continue your meditation session.  Continue to have more meditation sessions.  You are about to make breakthroughs.

If you’re really having difficulty staying put, a good meditation to use is ‘counting the breath’, where you count how long it takes you to breathe in and take twice as long for each breath out.  Mantra meditations and meditations where you have to visualize things are also helpful during these stages.

Namaste,
Corinne
